HAMILTON BAPTIST CHURCH
WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN NOVEMBER
Across the western world the Christian community is struggling with its response to people who identify as LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer). Some parts of the Christian community insist that the traditional approach of the church must be maintained. They do not recognise marriage between people of the same sex nor people who are transgender. Others argue that the traditional approach of the church is built upon a misreading of the Bible and are seeking to create church communities in which LGBTIQ+ people are fully included.
“A Conversation Around Sexuality” is an opportunity to reflect on a biblically and pastorally shaped approach to sexuality and gender identity.

How the Conversation Will Be Structured
In the space of one or two generations there have been dramatic changes in the way Australians understand sexuality and gender. Locating ourselves in this story of change will help us understand why and how we respond as we do.
We will devote time to hearing the personal stories of others. In particular we will listen to some gay, lesbian and transgender Christians share their stories and will take time to reflect on how their stories impact us.
You will have an opportunity to explore your story. This will help you understand your feelings, attitudes and values and why you have them.
We’ll identify the key biblical texts for sexuality and gender identity and the ways they are interpreted by those who maintain “traditional” views of sexuality and gender and those who do not.
